Breast engorgement is a common condition that can occur when the breasts become overfull with milk. It can be uncomfortable and even painful for the mother. Here are some tips to help manage breast engorgement:
1. Frequent breastfeeding or expressing milk:
Breastfeeding or expressing milk frequently can help relieve engorgement and prevent further milk production.
2. Warm compresses:
Applying warm compresses to the breasts before breastfeeding or expressing milk can help stimulate milk flow and ease discomfort.
3. Cold compresses:
Applying cold compresses to the breasts after breastfeeding or expressing milk can help reduce inflammation and pain.
4. Massage:
Gently massaging the breasts can help stimulate milk flow and relieve engorgement.
5. Supportive bra:
Wearing a supportive bra that does not compress the breasts can help relieve discomfort.
6. Avoid tight clothing:
Tight clothing can compress the breasts and contribute to engorgement, so wearing loose clothing can help prevent and relieve symptoms.
7. Pain relief:
Over-the-counter pain relievers such as ibuprofen or acetaminophen can help reduce breast engorgement pain.
Remember that breast engorgement is a normal part of the early breastfeeding process and should resolve on its own as your body adjusts to your baby's feeding patterns. However, if you experience severe pain, fever, or other symptoms, consult with a lactation consultant or healthcare provider for further evaluation and treatment.
